Terms of use

1. Your licence to use the app

You are granted a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to install and use the app on devices you own or control, for as long as these terms are observed. The app is free of charge; there is no subscription, no in-app purchase and no paid tier.

You may not:

• redistribute, sell, rent or sublicense the app, or offer it as part of a paid service;
• decompile, disassemble or reverse-engineer it, except where that right cannot lawfully be restricted and except as required by the licence of any open-source component the app includes — several of those licences expressly permit reverse engineering in order to debug modifications you make to the component, and nothing here restricts that (see Third-Party Licenses);
• remove or alter any notice of authorship, licence or attribution it carries;
• use it to break the law, or to interfere with networks or devices that are not yours.

The app and its artwork remain the property of their respective owners. This licence gives you no rights in the imaso project, in its name, or in any trademark.

2. What remains your responsibility

pimaso shows you video from cameras you configure and sends commands to a DVR you run. What those cameras watch, what the DVR keeps, and whether any of it is lawful where you are, are entirely matters for you.

• Cameras and recordings. You are responsible for complying with the laws that apply to you on video surveillance, recording, data protection, signage and consent — including where cameras can point, how long footage may be kept and who may see it.
• Audio. The app can play a camera’s live audio and, with a suitable camera and server, carry your voice to a camera’s speaker. Recording or transmitting audio of other people is regulated more strictly than video in many places. Satisfy yourself that your use is lawful.
• Your network and credentials. You choose the addresses, accounts and passwords the app connects with, and you are responsible for keeping your network, your server and your phone secure. Note that camera credentials stored on the phone stay usable on that phone — see the Privacy Policy and Accounts and roles.
• Your own server. imaso is a separate project that you install and operate. Its behaviour, its data retention and its security are governed by how you have configured it, not by this app.

3. Not a safety or security system

Do not rely on pimaso where failure would cause harm or loss. It is a viewer and a remote control, not a monitored alarm, not a life-safety system, and not a guaranteed recording chain. Video depends on your cameras, your network and your own server; motion alerts sound only while the app is open and require the server to be reachable; a phone that is asleep, offline, out of battery or out of range shows and announces nothing.

If something matters enough that missing it would be serious, it needs a system designed and monitored for that purpose.

4. No warranty

The app is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to the implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement.

No promise is made that the app will work with any particular camera, firmware, network or Android device, that it will be free of defects, or that any defect will be corrected. Cameras differ widely in how they implement RTSP, and a camera that another application plays may still be refused here.

5. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Alefa Studio shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, nor for any loss of data, footage, profit, property or opportunity, arising out of or in connection with the app or its use or inability to be used — including any event that was not seen, not recorded, not alerted or not retained.

Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited, and nothing in them affects statutory rights you have as a consumer.

6. Third-party components and distribution

The app includes open-source components, each under its own licence; they are listed on the Third-Party Licenses page and those licences continue to govern those components.

pimaso and imaso are both published by Alefa Studio. These terms cover the app only; imaso is separate software, obtained separately and governed by its own terms, and nothing here grants any right in it. Where the app is obtained through Google Play, Google’s own terms apply to that distribution in addition to these. Android and Google Play are trademarks of Google LLC.

7. Availability, updates and changes

The app is offered as a personal project. It may be updated, changed or withdrawn at any time, and no particular feature is promised to remain. An update may change or remove behaviour; release notes accompany each one.

These terms may be revised. The current version is always the one published at this address, with the date at the top. Continuing to use the app after a change means accepting the revised terms; if you do not accept them, uninstall the app — which removes it and everything it has stored.

8. Privacy

How the app handles data is set out in the Privacy Policy, which forms part of these terms. In short: no account, no analytics, no data sent to Alefa Studio.
